Being a coach by profession, I was called upon to assist with just about every team that she played for over those long hot summers.Upon graduation from high school,I started umpiring the sport full-time, but a notice came out about working with jv softball at Kempner in spring of 2006. I was able to get that job and as luck would have it, that helped me get this job at Travis.

Coach Shawna Steplock Assistant Softball Coach Living here all of my life except for the 4 1/2 years that I spent at college in Edmond, OK, while attending Oklahoma Christian University, I attended Lamar Consolidated High School where I played on their first softball team and graduated in 1996. I moved back to this area to be closer to my family because they are my backbone, my strength, and began teaching in the middle of the school year (quite possibly the hardest yet best lesson I could have ever learned) at Hightower High School in January 2001. I left there after 1 1/2 years and went to Dulles High School where I fell back into the love of the game. After being begged by some of my students to rescue them from a more than amateur coach, I gladly accepted and spent the next 3 years taking in every moment of the game. Starting my 6th year coaching softball is like every year: it begins with anticipation. The smell of the field, the feel of the dirt in your hands, the grip of the brand new ball stretched tightly by the red lacing: it screams “Play Ball” the first time the grass is cut on a warm early January day. Softball is always bittersweet: you love the game so much you want to live it, but life calls from home. I have a wonderful husband, Carl, of 2 years and a beautiful baby boy, Caden (16 months old). They demand my attention, so like any other spouse and parent, I’m torn between the love of the game and the love of the family. Hopefully, I won’t compromise the second for the first. When the weather clears and the sun comes out, they’ll be there to cheer us on. It’s a pleasure to work at Travis High School since it opened and I hope that we can create a tradition that others will be proud to uphold. Go Tigers! Coach Melissa Harrell JV Softball Coach I am a graduate of Elkins High School and Texas A&M University. This is my first year teaching and coaching and I am thankful to be at Travis High School. I haven’t played softball since my days in 12 and under, but am excited to be out on the softball fields again. I look forward to a great season and can’t wait to beat up on my alma mater, the Elkins Knights!
