On my list of things to talk about at our Parent Meeting day was the topic of game conduct. My reminder was supposed to be the administrator on duty or the police officer and they both were occupied with what was going on in the school at the basketball game. So, I need to touch on this subject.
Game Conduct--FYI, there was 4 sub-varsity basketball games this year canceled due to parental conduct at the game. On another occasion, a parent was asked to leave the game due to the loud nature of his displeasure. I can't emphasize enough to you that despite your best intentions, you probably will not change the umpire's mind or call by voicing some comment from the bleachers. A natural tendacy of a lot of umpires is to tighten the screws on the team causing the trouble or spotting the troublemaker and having them removed from the stands and we certainly don't want that to happen.
So, my best advice to you is to try and keep the comments to a minimum. Yes, they will miss a few strikes or a bang/bang play at the base, but for the most part, they do a pretty good job. Your quality of umpire will usually depend upon who you are playing on that day. Also, if there is someone in the bleachers being a little obnoxious, over the line, etc...please find the nearest administrator on duty and inform them and let them handle the problem.
Next --please refrain from trying to talk to your daughter during pre-game and game time. They do need to focus on the task at hand and it is pretty easy to do this with our field set-up
Finally--my ambitious goal for our hitathon fell short. Some players take the easy approach and let the parents foot the bill, some actually ask friends and family for assistance, and then some just don't participate in it at all. I wished I could say we don't have to do it, but it is a necessary event that all teams must go through nowadays. I appreciate the effort on this cookie venture that is going on and that will make up for a few that didn't meet the requirement or failed to participate. This Otis cookie sells itself...my wife just took it to her school and sold 25 tubs in one day....and that is just with a note on it explaining what it was for. So, anything that you can generate off of this would be certainly appreciated.
We still have our 100 Inning game in April and the focus on that one will be the businesses in the area...Our goal is find a sponsor an inning for $20...details on this will be forthcoming at the end of spring break.
Quick season review-- we finally got that monkey off our back at Humble and the Tigers showed some heart in coming from behind in their last at-bat to get 2 wins. Between now and March 1, the varsity plays 10 games against some of the better competition around.. Next Tuesday, we host the Elkins Knights, currently #3 in the state rankings and then next weekend, the varsity goes to Brenham for a 5 game festival. 3 of the 5 games of that tournament will be against teams either currently ranked or they went to the playoffs last year. A copy of this schedule is on the website.
The next update will be around spring break time.
